In the frame of the European Union (EU) – Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Project on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (ECAP III), our partner Aitor Pomares has been hired as a GI expert in order to advice the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia and the Kampot Pepper Promotion Association to protect and register the “Kampot pepper” as Geographical Indication in the European Union.
Following its adhesion to the WTO in 2003, Cambodia has recently implemented a sui generis system for the registration and protection of Geographical Indications in such a territory. “Pimienta de Kampot”, which refers to the well-known and high quality pepper produced in the provinces of Kampot and Kep, was the first local product to benefit from this system and get registration as a GI. Our firm will now advice the organisms of Cambodia and the Association of producers in order to get registration of the very first Cambodian GI in the European Union.
